We had been trying to get pregnant for 20 years. My wife had multiple surgeries for fibroids and endometriosis. We tried IVF 5 times as well as several IUI cycles with different Doctors in the area. We first met Dr. Abae in June of 1998. I had been seeing my Gynecologist for a few months but his treatment wasn’t working and it made me feel terrible with all of it’s side effects. I felt that I needed to put myself and my fertility in the hands of an expert. There were many clinics in the phone book, yet after calling a myriad of numbers, CARE-LIFE was the only one that struck a chord with me. I needed to feel that genuine concern, and booked an appointment right away. It was wonderful to have a doctor who truly cared and wanted to know everything about me, from A to Z. We covered all of the bases and he gave me an idea, that very first day, of what he felt our path should entail. Dr. Abae is a man of few words, yet he has an incredible way of reassuring you. I knew I had come to the right place. On October 1998 I did my first treatment cycle and I got pregnant with a singleton; he was born full term on June 30, 1999. He has been such a blessing. I can’t and don’t want to imagine my life without him. Fast forward three years…nightly I’d pray for all women and men struggling with infertility. Then I became pregnant and miscarried. I was distraught. Beginning to look on the internet I found that Doctor Abae was now also working at a satellite office in Miami, where I was living. I made an appointment; It was kismet. Once I saw him again I knew that I’d happily make the drive. So in October 2003 I began a second treatment cycle; I was accepted into a trial study. I was told that 17 eggs were retrieved and I would get a report the next morning telling me how many fertilized. The next step entailed leaving my eggs and my husband’s sperm in the caring hands of Dr. Rodriguez; he joked with us before the procedure that he would be our “first babysitter”. It may have been in jest but once you meet him, you realize that you wouldn’t want anyone else caring for your babies. He performed ICSI on all eggs that were mature. The next morning I received a phone call. His phone call came each morning for three days. On November 7th I was implanted with the two best looking embryos and the rest were frozen. The next two weeks were so long. I waited until the day I was scheduled for my blood test and that morning trying to gather my thoughts and prepare myself I did a home pregnancy test, It came up positive right away. I went and had my blood drawn and that afternoon I got a phone call saying I was pregnant! The first ultra sound showed only one yolk sac. The second embryo had not implanted. I was a little shocked but thrilled to see the beginnings of my baby. Two and a half weeks later, sick as a dog, I had another ultrasound to check for the viability of the pregnancy. I laid back and the doctor began the ultrasound; He said to his nurse,’ Do you see what I’m seeing?’ He’d found a second baby, strong heart beats on both. It seems the embryo that did implant split into two and created not one wonderful baby but two! I am now beginning my second trimester and doing well. The one thing that would make this story perfect was if Doctor Abae and his staff could continue caring for me throughout my pregnancy. It’s hard to say goodbye to them. Yes, I did go through a wonderful doctor to have these children but that doesn’t make it any less of a miracle. After finding out I was pregnant the first time, I was over the moon with joy and thanking Doctor Abae. It was a great experience with Dr. Abae. I had done 3 IVF cycles elsewhere. Other Doctors had seen a problem with my womb but Dr.Abae did surgery to correct it. Everything that was explained to us at the beginning was the way it went. Dr. Rodriguez, Dr. Abae and my nurse Maria were exceptional. I had already done two cycles at another clinic, one fresh and a frozen one, but both were unsuccessful, while on treatment, I felt like a number there, I only saw the Doctor on the first visit and I never saw him again until the day of egg retrieval. At CARE-LIFE everything was very personalized, Dr. Abae evaluated my condition carefully and took measurements 2-3 times on different appointments to make sure everything was OK.
